Good Government is an institution of change. When this change is happening, government and government departments are responsible for providing reliable and timely information to the public.

Establishing trust

Building trust in government and government institutions is essential in countries in transition. Where significant changes are occurring that have either immediate or long-term impacts on the citizenry, trust can only be established and maintained through reliable and timely communication.

The role of the media

Governments everywhere rely heavily on radio, television, magazines, newspapers, and online sources to reach wider groups of the population. The media has the role of filtering and analysing information from authorities to the public. Governments, government departments and institutions must consider the role and needs of the media when they seek to communicate with the population.

Free flow of information

In the absence of reliable information, much of the population will rely on unreliable information from social media to understand changes and decisions made by Government. Now more than ever, the Government's credibility and the acceptance of public policies depend on the degree to which it is open to scrutiny and discussion with the media.

A relationship that prioritises a free flow of information between the Government, government departments, government institutions and the media is essential for creating a public policy. When the public is allowed to understand the development of a policy, it is then easier for Government to build support and implement its objectives.

Creating an environment for media engagement

In an increasingly connected world, engagement with the media often begins and ends in the digital space. Apart from interviews, most media engagement happens through digital content. From sending a press release to providing media packs, access to news, events and story ideas all have a part to play. This is where Lookatmedia™ has an essential role with Government.

Preparation is everything

In the immortal words of Sun Tzu: "Every battle is won before it's ever fought". Lookatmedia™ centre can help you and your communications team prepare for a battle in the public arena… or avoid conflict altogether. By providing a media-friendly environment, you can support journalists in creating more informed and accurate reporting. Prioritising a media engagement strategy that sees the media as an ally can help you build trust and support the work you do, and your Lookatmedia™ centre has a vital role to play in that process.

In the public interest

Rightly so, the media has substantial protections for stories that are deemed 'in the public interest'. For that reason, Government must provide a reliable resource centre to allow journalists to research and create content. Lookatmedia™ is this resource centre. It enables government departments and institutions to publish their own newsworthy content, illustrated images, video and audio content from the fully integrated Lookatmedia™ centre Digital Asset Management (DAM) solution.

Newsworthy evergreen and backstories

Media engagement for government departments and institutions should not be reactionary. Often there are opportunities to get out in front of the story or other stories to tell. Lookatmedia™ allows you to create and publish press releases, news, and event content; it also provides a form for evergreen or backstories. This content can play an essential role in research for a journalist to build their story lines. Plus it plays a critical role in maintaining a broader conversation with the public about the role of Government.
